Dr Khan is a Research Fellow within Neuroinflammation Lab, School of Biomedical Sciences, The University of Queensland. Prior to migrating to Australia, he completed his Bachelor of Pharmacy in 2003 and worked for 5 years as Drugs Regulatory Officer at the Ministry of Health, Government of Pakistan. Later, he was awarded UQ International Scholarship to undertake a PhD at the Centre of Integrated Preclinical Drug Development (CIPDD), The University of Queensland under supervision of Prof Maree Smith. During his PhD he investigated novel pathobiological mechanisms associated with multiple sclerosis induced central neuropathic pain. In collaboration with A/Prof Mark Coulthard, Dr Khan’s current project is investigating the potential role of Ephs/ephrin signalling in repairing the vascular leak associated with severe sepsis using animal models and clinical samples from critically ill patients. In parallel, he is exploring novel therapeutic agents targeting innate immune protein such as complement, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Research Interests

  • Testing novel drug treatments in animal models of sterile (ischaemia–reperfusion injury) and non-sterile inflammation (SIRS/Sepsis).
  • Analysing clinical samples for translational research using various molecular biology techniques
  • Role of Ephs/ephrins signalling in SIRS/Sepsis
  • Role of peripheral immune cells in promoting neuroinflammation associated with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurodgernative diseases
