Academic advice
Academic advice is provided by the School of Biomedical Sciences Academic Advisors and includes advice on course selection (including selecting electives to meet specific interests or career aspirations), help planning studies, and career advice. Academic advisors also meet with students as part of their progress intervention plan.
Prior to booking an appointment you must:
- Read the resources and links available on this page
- Complete a self-progression check (please see steps below on how to complete a self-progression check) or seek a progression check from your Faculty. Note: only seek a Faculty progression check if you have completed more than half of your program. Faculty progression checks may take up to several weeks to be completed, please factor this in when booking an appointment.
- Create a list of questions or points to discuss
- Draft a study plan.
Note: If an appointment is booked without these steps having been completed it may be cancelled or rescheduled.
To book an appointment with an SBMS Academic Advisor go to StudentHub Appointments and search for SBMS.
Program planning

Self-progression check
Prior to seeking program or academic advice, students should familiarise themselves with their program rules and requirements by completing a self-progression check.
To complete a self-progression check, follow these steps:
- Download a Studies Report from mySI-net by going to:
- mySI-net -> Enrolments tile -> Studies Report
- Navigate to your Program Information and Requirements by going to:
- mySI-net -> Enrolments tile -> Program Summary -> then clicking on the Program Information and Requirements link beneath your program name.
- Select the year that you commenced your program from the top right-hand side, then click Change.
- If you commenced your program before 2021, view the Program Rules drop-down section. This will ensure that you understand your program requirements, for example, do you need to select a major; is there an advanced level requirement; etc. Once you understand your program requirements you can move to the next step.
If you commenced your program from 2021 onwards, your program rules and requirements are listed in the Course List (see step 4).
- From the Program Information and Requirements page above, navigate to your Course List by selecting the green Courses and requirements button on the left-hand side.
Hint: you can quickly access your Course List by going to mySI-net -> Enrolments tile -> Program Summary -> then clicking on the Course List button to the right of your Program name.
- Comparing your Studies Report to the Program and Course Requirements and Course List:
- Tick off the courses that you have successfully completed
- Highlight the courses that you plan to take in future semesters (Hint: note which semesters the courses are offered and use this list to create a Study Plan)
- Ensure all Core (compulsory) courses and courses that count towards the major/s (if applicable) are accounted for.
- Once you have gone through and ticked off all of your completed courses, view your Program Rules and Requirements again to ensure that you are meeting all requirements (e.g. overall structural requirements, advanced level requirements, etc). Ensure you can tick off that you have completed (or are planning to complete) all of the requirements.
