Congratulations to Ryan Atkins (3rd Year Medicine), Aimee O’Hara (1st Year Medicine), and Daniel Ryan (3rd Year Physiotherapy), who receieved a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) Dissection Award for the best dissections from the SBMS Summer Dissection Scholarships.
Nineteen Scholarship recipients were selected to perform 100 hours each of dissection over the summer break, in order to advance their own skills and anatomical knowledge, and to assist in the production of teaching specimens that will be used by thousands of their fellow students over many years to come.
While all Scholarship recipients produced specimens of benefit to our anatomy teaching programs, Ryan, Daniel and Aimee demonstrated advanced skills producing complex dissections of the highest quality.
Blind judging of the Awards was conducted by the Chair of Clinical Anatomy Professor Mark Midwinter, Chief Anatomist Associate Professor Carl Stephan and Gross Anatomy Facility Manager Wes Fisk.
Professor Kaye Basford presented each winner with three anatomy textbooks sponsored by RACS, and they will also join the team of Gross Anatomy Facility prosectors, a highly coveted role among our students.
Applications for the Scholarships are highly competitive with approximately 81 high-achieving students applying this year from a broad range of programs.
